How well this machine delivers on Brother’s  promise – is a different question and actually the exact question that I’ve tried to address in this review. No machine is perfect, and definitely this one is also not perfect, but it has its own edges over other machines and unique features that make it worth your dime.

Features

In terms of features, Brother SE 1900 is an amazing mix of embroidery-related and sewing-related features. What I love the most – one of the best features, is the big and colorful display. This machine is a nifty machine made with keeping customer’s ease and quick processing in mind.

Here are the most important features of SE1900.

138 Built-in Embroidery Designs –

This is what I was talking about. This machine can single handedly beat most of the embroidery/sewing-specific machines, irrespective of whether they’re made by Singer, Brother or any other company. You get to choose from 138 built-in embroidery designs in a WYSIWYG environment.

240 Built-in Stitches –

The other side of this machine is even better. This machine easily beats Brother CS6000i in terms of total number of built-in stitches. That machine has 60 built-in stitches; this one has 240 built-in stitches which is 3 times higher the total number of stitches provided by CS6000i.

11 Embroidery Fonts –

Apart from 138 built-in embroidery designs, this machine also lets you choose from 11 different font styles that are considered ideal for monograms and stuff like that. The fonts you get are from the famous families such as serif and sans serif etc.

Automatic Needle Threader –

This is no brainer; on a sewing machine as good as this one, there has to be an automatic needle threader. This is definitely a heavy-duty professional sewing/embroidery machine. So, in case you need to know a little about the cons (for the pros have already been explained), here is the explanation.

First problem is that this machine is expensive. Personally, I think if a machine provides both functions at their best (sewing and embroidery), price does not matter. But it definitely matters to some.

The other flaw is a little serious; more than one customer have complained that the needle threader stops working after a few weeks/months, and then it is all manual.

Do you know that most of the newbies don’t need to go with professional machines and a beginner sewing machine works fine for them.

Can this sew leather and can this be used for quilting?

While this machine can be used for sewing stitches on leather or canvas – more than one layer, it is not recommended, because it is a 2-in-1 machine. It’d be better if you use it for light to medium sewing and professional embroidery.

Do I need any software?

Yes, that is sort of down side of this thing, but Brother embroidery machines require you to have Brother’s proprietary embroidery digitizing software.

Can I use a hoop bigger than stock 5” x 7” hoop?

Yes, you can use bigger hoop too – for example, you can use 5” x 12” hoop on this machine.

Conclusion

Personally, I am a fan of Brother SE1900; not only because it is a two-in-one machine, but because of the attention of detail that you can enjoy on both sides.

However, there is a problem associated with doing so; your machine would be A+ in one style and A in the other. This one is more like an embroidery machine and the sewing side is not as strong as the embroidery one.
